VITA 34-Next Generation VME

Switched fabric interconnects are emerging as the next technological wave for communications. From chip-to-chip to board-to-board to chassis-to-chassis, they are poised to change the way busses function. The parallel synchronous bus may be giving way to a point-to-point interconnection system. The VITA standards organization is preparing for riding the switched fabric interconnect wave with the VITA 34 standard.

The main advantage of switched fabric interconnects is speed, followed by redundancy, high availability and scalability. To increase total throughput of a parallel bus, it must either be sped up or widened, both of which tend to put more limits on the number of devices that can be effectively connected to the bus. -More-

PICMG 3.0 update

PICMG 3.0 will be the core of an entirely new family of specifications optimized for switched fabrics. It was based on the need to create a "fabric agnostic" architecture.

The PICMG 3.0 subcommittee had its latest meeting on December 19th. The four-hour teleconference had a large contingent of members participating. It was an important meeting for several reasons. First, the form-factor working group, led by Joe Pavlat, presented its decision on an 8U by 280mm board size. The subcommittee approved the working group's recommendation. Second, fabric connectors were presented. Much like VITA 34, Tyco and ERNI presented the ZD connector, FCI and ITT Cannon the Metral line, and 3M presented the HSHM connector.

The next meeting is a teleconference the week before Bus & Board. At that time the subcommittee will vote on the connector. The next face-to-face meeting is at Bus & Board, the 3rd week of January.
