The embedded industry has been discussing new SFF architectures for applications with ever-tighter space constraints. This includes smaller packages in existing embedded systems, small UAVs and robotics, and new applications requiring high-performance. Solutions such as PC/104 and Com Express can be used in certain applications where ruggedness, backplane scalability and performance, and higher reliability are not critical. But, many rugged, Mil/Aero, and other mission-critical applications will require something more robust. Ideas for backplane-based solutions have been proposed.
