VITA 46 - Ready For Ballot

As in many industries, the military is beginning to use switched fabric technologies more often. VITA 41 (VXS) has been adopted to offer a backward-compatible evolution for VME that incorporates switched fabrics. Although Mesh configurations are possible in VITA 41, they are restricted to smaller segments. VITA 46 (VPX) is a new specification to offer a higher connectivity switched fabric that supports expansive full mesh connectivity. It combines switched fabrics and legacy VME signals but forgoes backwards compatibility for performance.

To meet the performance requirements, the working group chose TYCO’s MultiGig RT connector. The mated pair was put through environmental tests including shock and vibration, humidity, salt fog, dust and sand, durability and ESD. (It failed the salt fog test, according to MIL-STD-1344A without covers. The consensus was the test was too aggressive.) (-More-)

AdvancedTCA Interoperability Workshops

AIW11 is coming soon. The interoperability workshops for AdvancedTCA are for any participant who brings working product to test interoperability.

This workshop may focus more on the AMC (Advanced Mezzanine Cards) for ATCA. It may include E-keying and addressing. Other topics include IPMB-L and IPMB-O operations, as well as carrier IPMC and MMC resets.

New Products

2-slot 9U EasyPlug CompactPCI

The 2-slot 9U EasyPlug CompactPCI features a pluggable 47-pin connector for a hot-swappable power supply. The 9U monolithic backplane prevents the need for a separate power backplane, saving costs.

New ATCA Backplanes

Elma Bustronic has announced new ATCA backplanes. The 2-slot ATCA features a point-to-point mesh topology. The 14-slot Full Mesh offers maximum performance in a 19” rack. For 23” ETSI racks, a 16-slot Full Mesh backplane has also been developed.
