The CompactPCI (cPCI) bus is still a popular format for many applications. Although the newer PICMG-based specifications like AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA get most of the attention, cPCI still gets a larger portion of the new design wins. Why is this so?
There are several advantages to CompactPCI, a few of which include:
- Open specification
- Level of IO, pins available
- Hot Swap -- conducive to High Availability, low MTTR
- Flexible – 32-bit or 64-bit, 33 Mhz or 66 Mhz
- 3U and 6U sizes
- PICMG 2.16 and EXP0 (cPCI Express) scalability
- Large ecosystem, well understood
- Ubiquitous PCI-bus based
- Competitively priced for performance
CompactPCI is also one of the few backplane architectures to be successful in several industries – particularly Telecom, Mil/Aero, Industrial, and Medical. It is rugged enough for several Mil/Aero applications, with its Eurocard-based design. But, it’s also well-suited for Communications applications, including hot swap and IO available. More

AMC SerDes Test Cards - Coming Soon! |
|
The upgraded 5-slot ATCA backplane now features standard MicroTCA connectors ,
which are small and dense, for the Elma’s IPM Sentry shelf manager connections. In addition to saving space, the connectors are widely available, reliable, and with a compression mount design are field-replacable. If damaged, the MicroTCA connector can be unscrewed from the backplane and replaced.

The work to complete the PICMG 3.1R2 specification continues. This update will incorporate support for 10GBASE-KX4 and 10GBASE-KR signaling.
Other new documents in preparation include MicroTCA.1 Rugged, MicroTCA.2 Conduction Cooling, CompactPCI Plus and PICMG Interconnect Channel Characterization.

The adoption of serial link technology in MicroTCA poses significant debug, characterization, and test challenges. The AMC SerDes Test Module is an ultra low cost multi-lane Gbps serial plug-in board that achieves unprecedented density and performance. The module allows the user to characterize the PCIe and SATA ports quickly and efficiently. Both AMC and MCH versions are planned. |
