VPX is a highly flexible architecture that provides significant performance in 3U or 6U board configurations. Combining the rugged Eurocard form factor, 25 years of VITA’s expertise, and a high-speed topology, it is already very popular in many Mil/Aero systems. It is also a good fit for other mission-critical or high-performance applications.
The fact that VPX is so flexible is a benefit as the customer can utilize a wide range of configurations, serial topologies and links, legacy buses, etc. With plenty of IO, options for fat pipes and thin pipes, and topologies the possibilities seem endless. This is an asset of the architecture. However, it can be an issue for applications that demand more interoperability between vendor’s boards. The OpenVPX Working Group, whose work will be submitted through VITA 65, is creating pin definitions for system interoperability for VPX. The sub-specification will be ratified by VITA and submitted to ANSI, assuring that all VPX efforts are properly channeled and maintained in the open standard process. The VITA 65 efforts will also ensure compatibility to existing VPX systems. (Elma/Bustronic is a Steering Committee member of OpenVPX and co-launched the VITA 65 working group.)
VPX will now offer the powerful combination of design flexibility but also specific definitions for system interoperability options. Of course, not all systems and applications require specific definitions for interoperability. Today’s VPX products will continue to meet customer’s requirements now and into the future. In fact, Bustronic offers the widest range of VPX backplane and accessory solutions in the industry. This includes 3U, 6U, and 6U Hybrid backplanes and extensive custom VPX backplane experience. Bustronic also offers a VPX Load Board, Extender Board, SerDes Test Module, Filler Panel, and Universal RTM. Contact our sister company, Elma Electronic, for a wide range of VPX chassis, injector/ejector handle, panel, component, and integrated product solutions.
The results of the OpenVPX Technical Working Group's efforts are expected to be presented to the VSO for ratification before year's end. Contact Bustronic for more information on OpenVPX and VITA 65 efforts.
